The ordinate has a double scale. The change in the draft of the bow when receiving cargo into the bow is indicated in the left column with a + sign, in the right column there is a change in the draft of the stern and, consequently, for the most part with a — sign. It is better to write negative values in a different color. A double scale is also written on the right of the ordinate, which serves to count the change in draft when taking cargo aft. The side of the ship is drawn slightly higher with bulkheads, hatches and centers of volume of holds and twin decks, the calculation of which, especially the end ones, can be carried out using the approximate trapezoid rule or Simnson.
An example of using a diagram. It is necessary to calculate how much the ship's trim and draft will change fore and aft when loading 400 tons of cargo into hold No. 4. The center of gravity of the cargo being received coincides with the center of gravity of the volume of this hold. After loading 100 tons at the specified location, the trim will change by 18”, the draft of the stern will increase by 10”, and the bow will decrease by 6”. These numbers are taken directly from the right side of the chart. The results increase by 4 times from loading 400 tons. Thus, the trim change will be 72”. The draft of the stern will increase by 48”, and the bow will decrease by 24”.
It can be seen that the closer the load is applied to the middle of the ship, the less the trim change. Finally, this change becomes zero, and the change in the draft of the bow and stern is the same. This result is good enough for practical purposes, although it is inaccurate due to a number of assumptions. In particular, the lines are not straight, and the O point, to which we attribute the qualities of the center of gravity of the waterline, is not always in the same place. For more rough calculations, you can use the following rule. An ordinary four-key truck with a car in the middle has the property of increasing the draft of the nearest end twice as much as that of the other end, respectively, when loading into hatches No. 1 or No. 4. When loading into hatches No. 2 and No. 3, the draft of only one end changes, while the draft of the other remains constant. This rule can also be applied to other vessels with a large number of hatches. At the same time, the points having this property, roughly speaking, lie one-tenth of the length from the middle of the vessel and one-eighth of the length from its ends. To get a more accurate definition of this place, you can apply the following formula for the distance from the middle in feet.
